What’s in my Camera Bag
Hi guys!! SO I’ve been wanting to add on an educational section onto my website for awhile now and I feel like NOW is the perfect time to do it. Time and time again, I’ve been asked various questions on different aspects of my photography – so why not put it all in one place for you all to see?!
I’ve built my business from the ground up for over 6 years now and I have a whole lot of tips and tricks that I’ve learned along the way that I can’t wait to share! I want to be a source of encouragement and education on what’s worked for me and what hasn’t worked, in hopes of helping some of you build your dream career. I’m a firm believer in learning from others in your industry to enhance your knowledge + improve your lil business! So, here’s to 2019 – the year of growth!
Okay, so let’s get to it.
What’s in my camera bag?
I shoot every wedding with my two main camera bodies on my HoldFast Harness:
- Canon 5d Mark IV
- Canon 5d Mark III
Extra body: Canon 1D-C *great for video work, a bit too heavy for long wedding days!
Lenses:
- 50 mm 1.4 Sigma – my most used lens by far! So crisp.
- 35 mm 1.4 Sigma – probably the best lens for couples portraits in my opinion. The perfect focal length.
- 100 mm 2.8 Canon Macro – I call this my sniper lens. Mainly because I can capture candid shots of people from afar and get up. close. and personal.
- 16 – 35 mm 2.8 Canon – Great for wide landscape shots. Think itttyyy bitty people in a vast landscape.
Flashes: I always have two on me for all wedding days!
- Canon Speedlite 430EXIII
- YONGNUO Speedlite YN560IV – way less expensive than Canon’s + more accurate in my opinion.
Extras:
- SD + CF Cards
- Extra batteries (for cameras + flashes)
- Business cards … keep at least a few on hand!
- Lens Cleaner Spray
- Mircrofiber Cleaning Cloth (you can buy both here!)
- Rain Cover for your camera
- Snacks… always 🙂

Hello! I am a photographer in Alaska. I have owned my own business for 3 years now. I saw your beautiful images and then I came upon your post about asking questions and I have a few! I just recently upgraded to a canon 5D Mark IV from a Mark 3 And also upgraded to a canon 35 mm from a sigma art 35mm. I have had such a hard time getting a clear shot with it. My images also are a hit or miss with focus and it’s sooo frustrating. My usual settings are f1.8 low ISO and always higher than 160 for my shutter speed. I know it depends on the type of light you Shoot in but what are your go to settings to get such crisp shots?
What is your primary lens? I also have a canon 50mm 1.8 that I use occasionly. What would you suggest for my next lens? Also, I am trying to find new presets to work with this year and I love the crisp but yet golden color in your edits. What do you use for your presets?

Thanks so much for reading + following along! I’ve heard it can be hit or miss with the Sigma 35 mm for some reason. Mine has been reliable so far – hopefully your Canon will be nice and sharp! I’d maybe try to bump your f-stop up a bit, 1.8 is pretty shallow and could be the reason why you’re missing focus. My go to settings are usually 400 ISO and f/2.2 for couples!
I’d try a 100 mm for your next lens if you shoot weddings! That one has been such a game changer for me. I use a custom preset but I’d suggest bumping up your warmth a bit to achieve more golden tones!

Hi Kayla!!!I’ve been following your work for a while now and what can I say, your photos are AMAZING!!! I recently started photography and I am so excited to be shooting my first wedding in June. I don’t have the budget to buy a new, full frame camera just yet so I have to use my canon rebel T5 for a while. I was thinking about renting a extra body and a extra lens because I currently use my canon 50mm 1.4 for all my photos and it works okay but want something different for this wedding. Should I rent the sigma 35mm 1.4 or the sigma 50mm 1.4 for this wedding?
